Teaching
My teaching focuses on issues in contemporary political philosophy, from foundational issues of legitimacy, democratic inclusion, and justice, to applied issues concerning freedom of speech, racial equality, and colonialism.
I am currently responsible for Justice (PHIL3663).
The foundation of my pedagogy is to show students that philosophical questions are never far from the surface of practical issues they care deeply about, and that political philosophy provides intellectual resources to better understand, evaluate, and change the institutions and practices that permeate our lives.
I work hard to instil intellectual virtues in my students, emphasising the importance of hard work and perseverance, and the values of intellectual humility and respectful disagreement. I always encourage my students to see the merit of views they disagree with, inviting them to see the opportunities for intellectual growth that comes with questioning one’s assumptions and beliefs about politics, social practices, and moral life.
